Stretching your Stitching
Stretching your Stitching
Date: Sunday 3rd August
Time: 10 am till 3 pm
Tutor: Ailie Snow
The aim of this workshop is to create a series of samples, using a variety of different stitching styles and techniques. This is not about special embroidery stitches ( you‘ll maybe know much more about that than I do. ) It is about taking a look at the amazing variety that can be achieved with some of our common stitches, and the many different ways to employ them. Stitch is basically ‘needle in needle out’. Creating a particular look is really up to the way you make the mark with your needle and thread.
You will need :
All your usual ‘tools of the trade’ – scissors, pins, needles, etc.
Some plain backing fabric as a base for your work. Calico or cotton, something ordinary, just whatever you happen to have in your cupboard.
A selection of small fabric pieces to use in ‘collage’ as a base for stitching; look for some variety, plain and patterned, different fabrics, but nothing too heavy. Maybe include some filmy stuff, like organza or chiffon, if you happen to have it.
I suggest you stick to a restricted colour palette, say 2 close main colours, with just a splash of contrast, as this will make it easier to achieve a coordinated look in your work.
A variety of threads you like to use, and needles to suit your threads. I use mostly cotton perle no.8 or similar, which is a good weight for the work you’ll be doing in this class, as it’s heavy enough to show an effect. Also, bring some finer threads for contrast.
I’d like you to bring a piece of your current work to show me. I’ll be bringing an extra stash of fabric and threads for you to play with.
