We are inverting the process of blackwork by using coloured threads on a black background, which makes the colours really pop!

In this class, students will learn the traditional art of blackwork with a modern spin. Through hands-on instruction and guidance, students will develop the skills and techniques needed to bring tui/kereru and kowhāi/karaka to life through embroidery.

Course Highlights:
• Introduction to embroidery tools and materials
• Understanding different blackwork embroidery stitches and their applications
• Exploring the embroidery patterns and designs
• Learning to transfer designs onto fabric
• Practising various stitching techniques to create texture and detail

By the end of this class, students will have gained the knowledge and confidence to create their own stunning blackwork embroidery pieces, capturing the beauty and intricacy of the natural world with
their needle and thread.

Techniques: Traditional Blackwork, filling stitches and couching.
Skill levels: All

Kit: $70 To be paid to the tutor on the day.

The Kerereu kit includes:

  • Working notes

  • 25 ct Evenweave linen (Navy)

  • Tissue paper sheet

Tutor’s Statement
Natalie Iogha works at the intersection of art and craft. Her embroideries are unique designs with non-traditional themes, created using a selection of new and reclaimed fabrics and threads. She has trained in embroidery at the Royal School of Needlework (RSN) in London and holds a Bachelor of Visual Arts from the Auckland University of Technology (AUT).
