Time: 10 a.m. to 12 p.m

Week 1 - Tips and techniques for learning the basics of crochet. If you have ever wanted to learn here is your opportunity to give it a go. You will learn chain, double crochet, treble, turning increasing and decreasing.

Week 2 - Circles and squares where you will learn the tricks to crocheting in a round, turning corners and how to change colours.

Week 3 - Beyond the basics where you will learn all there is to know about attaching beads, creating intricate patterns and using different crocheting threads

Week 4 - A project of your choice and a helping hand from Cathy to get going and make sure you are on the right track.

Class 1: straight rows – dishcloth

This class with focus on the basic stitches of chain, treble and double crochet (UK terms), how to read a pattern and select the right hook. We will practice the stitches and then start on a dishcloth.

What to bring: crochet hook 4mm is preferable but 4.5mm is OK. Pure wool (not acrylic) double knitting/8ply yarn – just for practicing on. Cotton for the dishcloth – double knitting/8ply, 1 x 50g ball.

 

Class 2: working in the round – granny squares

This class will look at how to work in the round and change colours, practice increasing and decreasing. We will make some granny squares and try simple lace patterns.

What to bring: crochet hook 4mm is preferable but 4.5mm is OK. Pure wool (not acrylic) double knitting/8ply yarn. Bring a couple of colours to practice changing.

 

Class 3: beyond the basics with lace stitches, reading patterns with symbols. We will make a tealight candle holder cover – a quick Christmas gift.

What to bring: crochet hook 4mm is preferable but 4.5mm is OK. Cotton for the candle holder cover – double knitting/8ply, 1 x 50g ball and a jam jar or short preserving jar. We can also look at making jam jar covers for homemade jams/chutneys – also great Christmas gifts. If you have scraps of different colours (in cotton) bring them along.

Class 4: In discussion with the class’s needs you will learn extra techniques such as adding beads to your crochet and using fine thread. While applying these techniques to your own creation or making your own Jam Jar cover.
